5 Meaningful Ways to Use Postcards (Beyond Just Sending Them)

There’s something timeless about postcards. They’re small, simple, and often overlooked — but that’s exactly what makes them special. Just a few words, a little stamp, and suddenly you’ve created something worth keeping.

If you’ve ever wondered what to do with postcards (besides mailing them), here are 5 of my favorite ways to use them:

🌿 1. Send a tiny note to someone you love

The obvious choice — but one we forget about. Writing a few lines on the back of a postcard can feel more meaningful than a whole letter. It’s short, sweet, and perfect for:

  • A quick “thinking of you”

  • Encouragement on a hard day

  • A thank-you note that feels more personal than a text

💌 2. Decorate your walls with mini art

I feel like this is really slept on -- postcards double as affordable art prints!! Use washi tape to create a rotating gallery wall, tuck them into a bulletin board, or frame a few together. It’s a simple way to surround yourself with little reminders that spark joy. I personally have a few postcards hanging above my work computer to always look at.

✍️ 3. Use it in a junk journal

Stick the entire postcard in your junk journal and layer stuff on top of it to create a simple background, or tear/cut certain parts of the postcard you love. Junk journals are such a great way to capture little items throughout your day and using artistic postcards is a unique alternative.

🎨 4. Use it as art

Alternatively, instead of cutting out sections of the postcard and placing them into your journal or sketchbook, what if you used the postcard as your starting point for a new piece of art? Apply a layer of paint over some or all of the postcard to create an entirely new piece - add your own doodles, designs, or thoughts, and voila, a new creation is born!

🎁 5. Add one to a gift

Instead of buying a card, slip a postcard into a wrapped gift. It’s smaller, easier to keep, and doubles as art long after the gift is opened. Bonus: you can match the design to the season or the personality of the person you’re gifting.

Why Postcards Still Matter

In a world full of quick messages, postcards slow us down. They make us savor words, textures, stamps, and even the walk to the mailbox. And sometimes the smallest envelope (or card) carries the biggest care.

If you’d like to add a little postcard ritual to your life, you can join the Wild Petals Postal Service — a $5/month snail mail club where I send you an exclusive art postcard, a tiny sticker, and a handwritten note.

✨ Bonus: join before August 31st and your first envelope will have 2 postcards instead of 1.
